Healthy Holiday Tip #12
You’re probably wondering what cleaning out the fridge has to do with staying healthy this holiday season. Well, a lot because consuming spoiled foods can cause foodborne illness.
1. Toss any foods that are expired (especially during the holidays). Foods kept too long can cause bacteria to grow and contaminate foods.
2. Check the temp to make sure the frig is 40°F or less, and the freezer is at 0°F or less. Keep your fridge and freezer at the proper temps can prevent foods from spoiling quicker.
3. Next time you open a new food item or have leftovers, remember to label it with a date, so you know how long it has been in the fridge. This way, it can make it easier to know when to toss.
My kitchen tip: I like to use a small piece of tape and write the date I opened or made the food with a sharpie. Then, I stick it on the top, or I simply write directly on the container.
